Luke Christian Haynes
The Luke Christian Haynes story.
Luke Christian Haynes was an amazing, loving, intelligent, and gifted son, grandson, brother, uncle and fiance who died in the prime of his life on July 29th, 2022. Luke was an outdoorsman and loved working with his hands. His passion was building custom fence and he was an impressive welder.
Luke had a seizure while driving home from work on April 3rd of 2022 resulting in a car wreck where he crashed into a fence. Fortunately, he was not injured. At that time, he attributed the seizure to a poor appetite and poor hydration. He had a second seizure at home on April 15th and became concerned about his health. He didn't have insurance, so we were looking for a neurologist who would see him on a cash basis.
On his first scheduled appointment (May 24, 2022) that office told him his afternoon appointment was actually earlier in the morning, so the appointment was rescheduled for May 31, 2022 at their first available appointment. When we arrived for this appointment, we found the office was closed. Precious time was lost because this provider did not want to deal with a person without insurance. He had another incident on June 14, 2022, still waiting to find a physician to treat him.
We found an amazing primary care doctor who would do an initial workup rather quickly on July 12th. There was nothing conclusive found in these tests so we were scheduled with a second neurologist who rapidly rushed him in for an initial assessment on 07/21/2022. An EEG was scheduled for several weeks later with instructions to come in sooner if there were any other seizure type activity which would be more diagnostically revealing on the EEG.
At this time Luke was advised not to drive due to the uncertain nature of seizures, but he continued driving so he could keep working.
Luke and I had been discussing a welding project for a couple days that he was going to help me with on July 30th. At 2:15 on July 29th he sent me his last message before he was killed in a car wreck minutes later from a seizure. The last word that Luke Christian Haynes said to me was “Honestly”.
Unfortunately, we never got to find out what the cause of his seizures was. The delay in access to specialists who could have worked with him to find the cause and treatment for his seizures because he was uninsured played a huge role in his untimely death.
The goal of the Honestly Foundation is to provide access to a network of providers and services that can, regardless of the ability to pay, allow timely diagnostic and treatment options for people that otherwise would stay away because of their lack of ability to pay.
Our Mission:
To provide access to essential and potentially lifesaving services to people who are under or not insured and lack the means to access a network of services that could provide meaning, quality and dignity to their lives.
